Travel to and Vacation in Beech Mountain

We are all gearing up toward welcoming our new and experienced visitors, summer residents and new homeowners to Beech Mountain.  Despite some hail storms and even snow (yes, we had snow yesterday and Monday!), things are bright and beautiful on Beech Mountain.

There are various publications online that will educate those looking to travel to North Carolina.  The NC Division of Tourism is one such site.  For the April issue, click on

There is also an excellent article in the May 2012 US Airways magazine.  I am trying to get a copy of the article via a link or pdf and will share that if I can get it.  Otherwise, the Chamber should have a copy in their office.  Stop by and take a look at it if you have a chance.

There are many events planned for Beech Mountain so plan your vacation to come take advantage of those events you may be interested in.  A full list and dates for the events can be found at the Chamber website,  Scroll down and look on the right side.  New events are being added by our various restaurants, general mercantile, hotels, etc. For instance, outdoor movies around two fire pits will continue at the Brick Oven Pizzeria this summer.....Live concerts will continue at the gazebo by Fred's General Mercantile and the Alpen Inn.....the Cool 5 - a 5k race/walk/stroll and the National Gravity Nationals offer both spectator and participant activities.....our Roasting of the Hog occurs on June 30th this year with great food, fireworks, a live band and great fun for all.....The Summer of 79 continues for Stay and Play - a chance for those visitors staying in a qualified Beech Mountain Club property to play the private, tournament quality golf course for $60 - and it's FREE if the temperature exceeds 79 degrees at our official weather station, located at Fred's General Mercantile.

Stay tuned for the latest and greatest happenings on Beech Mountain this summer.  Hope to see you soon!

Beech Race Weekend Features a 5-Miler at 5,000'

News Release information provided by Craig Distl

Cool temperatures and a warm welcome await runners June 8-10 as the Town of Beech Mountain hosts its fifth annual "A Cool 5" race weekend.

The weekend's centerpiece is a 5-mile race on Saturday, June 9. The race is run atelevations above 5,000 feet, traversing the highest points on Beech Mountain.

"There is nothing else like it on the East Coast," says race director Daniel Scagnelli of the Beech Mountain Parks & Recreation Department. "The road course opens up great vistas and the scenery is amazing. You'll see Mount Mitchell, Grandfather Mountain and even the yellow brick road at the old Land of Oz theme park."

The 5-miler has a companion event, a 1.5-mile fun run/walk. Both start at 9 a.m. and are followed by lunch and massages for participants. Runners age 21 and up receive two post-race complimentary beverages.
There's also a pub crawl (with transportation provided) from 4-10 p.m. Saturday on Beech Mountain.

Race weekend festivities kick off Friday evening at 5:30 p.m. with a pasta dinner featuring guest speaker Lee Zohlman of Miami. Zohlman is one of the top endurance multi-sport coaches in the United States.
Sunday morning, there's a recovery yoga session at 10 a.m. and recovery hike at 11 a.m.
Race participants and their families are encouraged to take advantage of special lodging rates available throughout the weekend.
A Cool 5 entry fee for adults is $25 through May 6; and $30 from May 7 until race day. Race day registration is $35. Children 13 and under may register at any time for $20.

Entry fees include a t-shirt, post-race meal, goodie bag, beverages and admission to the pub crawl. Strollers are allowed in both races, while the fun run is pet-friendly. There will also be a supervised children's play village during the race.

Mountain Biking on Beech Mountain

Beech Mountain is becoming more and more popular with bikers....especially mountain bikers.  With the USA Cycling Mountain Bike Gravity National Championship choosing Beech Mountain for their annual event last year and July 20-22 this year, more mountain bikers are discovering the outback trails and spreading the news.

Spring Has Sprung...Despite an Occasional Flurry in the Forecast

The hummingbirds are back, tulips are blooming and the trees are cautiously showing us a preview of the buds and flowers that will adorn them very soon.

In the meantime, we are seeing more of our furry and feathery neighbors neighbors making their rounds to say "Hello, I'm back."

Our April snow is predicted to return on the 10th and 11th, which is now expected each year.  Hold off on planting those trees and bushes until after May 1st!
